GUYS
AS DOLLS: Starring
Joe Posa & Joe Schmitz
Let’s
cut right to the chase, this was a fun show. I sat up front, stage
left, right next to three lovely woman from North Dakota. They
told me, “We can’t use the word drag where we come from. We
have to say female impersonator.” I ordered drinks just as the
lights went down and a video screen on stage came to life. It was
a clever opening, and it was used effectively throughout the show
(footage of stars performing, historical looks, etc.).
The
duo: one a lip-synching performer who does an impressive Barbra
and Judy, the other a singer-impersonator with burlesque-type
humor, take turns performing, making for a fast moving show. Joe
Posa’s timing is as good as it gets, and as good as I’ve seen.
Right down to the smallest mannerism. A reedited piece about Susan
Lucci winning the Emmy award, after being nominated 19 times, was
very funny. And right on cue Schmitz arrives on stage in a less
than serious parody of stars such as Cher (and Sonny), Britney,
Madonna, Patsy Kline, and Celine. As Marilyn, Schmitz played with
the audience. She got sexy with one fellow, and in the absence of
an engagement, wedding, birthday or bar mitzvah to sing about, she
proceeded to sing “Happy Divorce To You” to a woman from the
audience who seemed to enjoy the humor of it all.
The
show is not Broadway, but it did win best production in Key West,
and plays regularly in Provincetown where the two first began. My
friend Victoria giggled and laughed throughout because it was fun
and entertaining. Isn’t that what it’s all about? The show
travels so for more info go to www.guysasdolls.net
